Supposed "Gilf Kebir Formation" in the Gilf Kebir
"Gilf Kebir Formation" in the Jebel Kamil and northern Sudan area

Flora of the Abu Ballas Formation in comparison The existence of a Gilf Kebir Formation in the southwestern desert - which is described as equivalent of the Six Hills and Abu Ballas formations - is to prove only with a comparison of allochthonous plant imprints in the profiles. A comparison of the facies types is not sufficient. A comparison of the flora is due to the different facies types (life conditions) not possible. In comparison of floras from the Gilf Kebir and the Abu Ballas Formation should we perhaps see similarities, apart from the often converging determinations. Then is it certainly true to call the Gilf Kebir Formation as equivalent of the Abu Ballas Formation. But it remains questionable because the finds of plant imprints are in such poor condition that the determination and classification as Mesozoic flora are also questionable . The Carboniferous age of the finds in the Gilf Kebir/Jebel Kamil area can not be excluded. BÖTTCHER , 1982 "Innerhalb der überwiegend
